Eligible voters could soon approach the approved internet cafes to get their names included in the voters’ list through the online facility introduced by the Election Commission of India.

Willing internet cafes are required to enter into MoU with the commission for offering the service. The commission has identified 994 cafes in Tamil Nadu and in Tiruchi district about 40 cafes have come forward to enter into the agreement. The approved list of cafes will be publicised once they sign the agreement. District officials organised an orientation session on the procedures to be followed by the owners of internet cafes who have come forward to offer the service, on Saturday.

Under the facility, voters can submit applications for inclusion of names under the summary revision of electoral rolls to be taken up from October 1.

The cafes will file the applications online and electoral officers will conduct door-to-door verification of the applications.

The applicants will be issued Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) within 40 days, according to an official press release.

Cafes can charge Rs. 10 for registration of applications for inclusion, deletion or correction of names in the voters’ list.

They can charge Rs. 3 for providing printouts of the voters’ list. Owners of cafes who have applied to enter into the agreement can dial the toll free number, 1950, for clarifications.

K. Dharbagaraj, District Revenue Officer, and Sathya Balagangadharan, election tahsildhar, briefed the owners and employees of internet cafes.
