Screening of actor producer Kamal Haasan’s film Vishwaroopam did not take place in cinema theatres in the central districts on Wednesday causing huge disappointment and resentment to his fans. The joy of Kamal Haasan’s die-hard fans after Madras High Court stayed Tamil Nadu government’s ban on the film late Tuesday night was short lived as the movie was not screened in the theatres it was slated to be released.
Theatre owners said despite armed with licence to screen the movie they could not go ahead and screen it as they were awaiting orders from the Collector, and who had passed an order under Section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure a few days ago.
Angered over non-screening of the movie, a section of Kamal Haasan’s fans resorted to a road roko for some time in front of Kalaiarangam theatre in the city outside which huge boards of Vishwaroopam had been installed.
Upon immediate intervention of the police and office bearers of Kamal fans association, the agitating fans dispersed. Kamal fans association had booked tickets in bulk for the first show of the movie at the theatre.
Right from the morning, Kamal fans thronged the theatres expecting that the movie would be screened following the High Court’s ruling. However, they all had to return disappointed upon being informed by the theatre staff that the movie could not be screened as the order from the Collector had not come.
The movie was to be released in six theatres in the district including four in the city. Sources said a posse of police personnel was deployed in front of the theatres in the district as a precautionary measure to ensure order.
