Residents of Thaalakudi resorted to road roko on Tiruchi - Ariyalur National Highway on Wednesday.

They were arrested and lodged in a nearby marriage hall.

They complained that the continuous drilling of bore-well in their village under Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme had been hitting their farm work. Iskhan, a farmer, said that about half a dozen deep bore-wells had been sunk in their village by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board for supply of water to a cluster of villages. The first well was set up about a decade ago and five more wells had been sunk later on.

K. Senthilvel, another farmer, said that farm operation had come to a standstill in their village due to excessive sand mining and sinking of bore wells.

They have been opposing erection of fresh bore-well in their village for the past one month as black gram and coconut trees had withered due to poor groundwater level.

When the police came to their village, they resorted to road roko.
