VC search committee to take final call

The search committee to choose the next Vice-Chancellor for Bharathidasan University will hold its final sitting in Chennai on Tuesday, it is learnt.

The meeting that was supposed to have taken place on Monday was postponed.

The Member Secretary of Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education S. Bhaskaran is the Committee Convenor.

T. Arivudainambi of Rajah Serfoji Government Arts College, Thanjavur, is the Senate nominee while S.Subbiah of Alagappa University is the Syndicate nominee in the three-member Committee.

Meanwhile, a university release said that the outgoing Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko handed over charge to the senior most Professor N. Ramanujam, Head of the Mathematics department, as per the University Act, on Saturday.

The name of the chosen candidate is likely to be announced within the next few days, sources said, adding that in any case, Dr. Ramanujam will continue to discharge the official responsibilities till the announcement is made.

In the event of the Higher Education department deciding to constitute a sub-committee for administration of the university, an emergency meeting of the University's Syndicate will have to be convened at Chennai.

But, the necessity may not arise, they said.

This time around, the number of contenders for the post has risen.

There are at least five applicants from within the university, sources added.
