Bharathidasan University Teachers Association (BUTA) has expressed surprise over what it called haste shown by the University in recruiting 38 new teachers and issuing appointment orders to them, despite the Deputy Secretary in the Higher Education department voicing dissent. Charging Vice Chancellor K. Meena with indulging in “favouritism” and committing “administrative and financial irregularities”, a press release issued by BUTA said appointments were made in violation of UGC norms and reservation policy at a time when a writ petition filed by the Association on the issue was pending in the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court and the enquiry report by DVAC on the first round of recruitment was pending.
Enquiries
Though the DVAC had conducted enquiries with all members of interview committee and had submitted its report to the Government, the Vice-Chancellor initiated the second round of recruitment, advertising for the faculty positions during August.
Approved appointments
Despite the dissent , the Syndicate had approved the appointments on December 22, despite Saturday being a holiday, and a few of the new recruits had also joined work on the same day even before confirmation of their appointment by the government, the release said. When asked over phone about the approval to appointments by the Syndicate despite the dissent expressed by a senior official of the Higher Education department, the Vice-Chancellor refused to reply.
