The Tiruchi Railway Division, with a view to cope up the increasing passenger patronage, has taken up capacity augmentation work in Tiruchi Railway Junction.
Various development works including broad gauge track laying, provision of signal and tele communications, over head electric traction and electrical work, all worth Rs. 15 crores are progressing at a fast pace.
Tiruchi junction is one of the major railway stations in the Southern Railway and handles 120 express and passenger trains and a passenger traffic of about 50,000 people per day. After the completion of ongoing doubling work of Villupuram – Vriddhachalam – Tiruchi (chord line) – Dindigul; and Tiruchi - Thanjavur sections the number of trains, the passenger patronage of Tiruchi junction is expected to increase manifold.
One of the major work taken up in Tiruchi junction is the connectivity work of platform 6 and 7. This work was launched on December 4 and is targeted to be completed within a week’s time. These platforms are built with capacity to hold 24 coach trains. Both the platforms are provided with washable concrete aprons for easy and quick cleaning of the track surface and maintaining hygiene. Platform No.6 is provided with the coach watering facility also, according to a press release of Manjula Rangarajan, Divisional Railway Manager.
As part of capacity augmentation one goods line with capacity of holding 58 wagon. Three stabling lines with capacity of holding 24 coaches and one VIP siding with two coaches capacity is also getting ready at Tiruchi junction. The dedicated goods line will ease the goods movement through the junction which otherwise has to pass through the passenger platforms.
The stabling lines provided at the southern side of the platform will drastically reduce the cris-cross shunting movements in the Tiruchi yard and will increase the stabling capacity of the yard. All these facilities will help the speedy reception and dispatch of trains at Tiruchi junction which will improve the punctuality and benefit passengers immensely, Mrs. Manjula Rangarajan added.
