The week-long strike by village administrative officers (VAOs) culminated in a hunger strike demanding fulfilment of eight demands, here at Avurithidal on Wednesday.
The demands included promotion of VAOs with 10 years of service to the position of revenue assistant and those with completion of 20 years of service to that of deputy Tahsildar. The government order seeking monthly progress reports from VAOs should be repealed. Promotions on the basis of seniority should be evolved district-wise in a consolidated list that included shorthand writers and typists.
The protesters have sought implementation of one-person commission recommendations which suggest the basic pay of VAOs be increased on similar lines of special grade and selection grade employees. Besides, the annual maintenance funds for office should be increased to Rs.800.
Work specification of VAOs should be construed as the ‘basic work' under the Department of Revenue. Additionally, a demand has been made to double the travel allowance.
According to the VAOs, TA has been doubled for other government employees as per the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. Lastly, they have called for filling up of over 5,000 vacancies.
The day-long hunger strike was part of the State-level demonstrations by VAOs at district headquarters.
