A UKG girl was run over by a school van near her house at Tiruvanaikoil here on Wednesday evening.

Five-year-old girl V. Madhusitha was studying in Vignesh Vidyalaya, a private school at Koothur on the city’s outskirts and commuting by the school van.

Police sources said the girl was dropped near her house at Akilandeswari Nagar by the van driver.

But she had apparently left behind her footwear in the vehicle and came back to collect them when the driver was backing up and did not notice the child.

Madhusitha was knocked down and came under the rear wheel of the vehicle.

She was rushed to the Srirangam Government Hospital where doctors declared her dead.

The driver, R. Raghavan, surrendered before the police.

The Traffic North Police (Investigation) unit are investigating.
