With the world turning its attention towards India and keen on forging business tie-ups, industrial units in the country should upgrade their technological skills and standards to become globally competitive , Union Minister for Commerce and Industry E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan said here on Sunday.
In the current competitive business atmosphere, industrial units should be prepared to take on the challenges from other countries and create a niche for themselves by shoring up their standards, Mr.Natchiappan said inaugurating the common facility centre established by the Tiruchirapalli Engineering and Technology Cluster (TREAT) at Siruganur near here.
European Countries, United States, Canada and Australia besides the Commonwealth of Independent States were keen on forging and expanding business ties with India keeping in mind the country’s technical competence and the availability of huge talent pool, he said.
In this backdrop, it is important for industrial units to upgrade their technological skills and standards to meet global requirements, Mr.Natchiappan said. The Central government had planned a systematic mechanism to sort out the problems faced by the industry. Industrial projects would get expedited and take off soon if the agencies concerned work in unison, he said .
Giving an overview of the state-of-the-art common facility centre, the managing director, TREAT, K.G. Muralidharan, said the objective of setting up the facility was to enhance the manufacturing capabilities and capacity of the fabrication cluster in and around Tiruchi.
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion under the Ministry of Commerce had sanctioned a grant of Rs.60 crore for the common facility centre established on 15 acres.
Fabrication units – micro, small and medium – in and around Tiruchi that were unable to afford advanced machines could make use of the common facility at a cost less than the ones charged in the open market, he said. Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited, Tiruchi, Executive Director A.V.Krishnan said the commissioning of the common facility centre had addressed the long-felt need of the Tiruchi fabrication cluster.
