The Tiruchi Corporation has planned to extend the underground drainage system to uncovered areas of the city in a phased manner.

The detailed project report for extending the sewer system to four wards fully and six others partially at an estimate of Rs.439.21 crore has been drawn up. The Corporation is planning to execute the project with financial assistance under the Union government’s AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) programme. The project is planned to be executed through the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board.

Under this phase, Wards 36, 39, 40 and 41 would be fully covered with underground sewer system and Wards 35, 37, 38, 42, 43 and 45 would be covered partially. Sewer lines are proposed to be laid for a length of 319 km in these 10 wards and pumping mains for about 25 km. Seven pumping stations and 15 lifting stations would be established. Nearly 30,000 households would be connected to the underground sewer system in this phase.

Corporation Commissioner N. S. Prema said that the project would be executed with funding from Central and State governments, besides contribution from the Corporation. “The technical evaluation is going on. Once it is over, the project will be executed after obtaining administrative sanction from the government,” she said.

In the next phase, the sewer system would be extended to all omitted and uncovered areas of the city. As per the detailed project report, this phase would entail an investment of Rs.452.96 crore. Sewer lines are proposed to be laid for a length of 374.50 km with seven pumping stations. Under this phase, nearly 47,000 house service connections could be added. The Corporation is hoping to get government grant for this phase too.

In the final phase, the civic body has plans to revamp the existing sewer lines and pumping mains, to meet the requirements of the population growth, at an estimate of about Rs.128 crore. The existing sewer system often gets clogged and overflows through man holes require frequent interventions by the corporation workers.

The existing sewer system in the city runs for a length of about 352.40 km and has a capacity to handle about 88.64 million litres a day (MLD) of sewerage. The system has about over 44,100 house service connections and on an average 52 MLD of sewerage is pumped to the treatment plant at Panchapur in the outskirts of the city. The city, spread over 167.23 square km, has roads running for a total length of 1,411 km.

The corporation is already executing a project to extend the under ground sewer system to the omitted areas in Srirangam, sanctioned at an estimate of Rs.24 crore.
