For the second successive year, St. Joseph’s College here has emerged victorious in the Bharathidasan University inter-zonal inter-collegiate men’s football tournament. The victory was sweeter this time since the team has retained the title without conceding a goal.

Eleven colleges in Tiruchi zone, comprising Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, and Ariyalur districts, and eight colleges in Thanjavur zone, consisting of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Pudukottai districts, took part in the tourney.

Four-team league

Two colleges from each zone – St. Joseph’s College and Bishop Heber College (Tiruchi zone) and AVVM Sri Pushpam College and Khadir Mohideen College (Thanjavur zone) – qualified for the inter-zonal four-team league held at Pudukottai.

St. Joseph’s College won all its matches in the four-team league to finish on top. Bishop Heber College (a win, a draw, and a loss) took the runner-up spot.

AVVM Sri Pushpam College (two draws and a loss) and Khadir Mohideen College (one draw and two losses) were third and fourth respectively.

St. Joseph’s College scored a total of 28 goals in the tournament (14 each in the zonal and inter-zonal stages).

Rev. Fr. F. Andrew, principal of the college, Rev. Fr. S. Sebastian, secretary, Rev. Fr. S. Aruldoss, sports coordinator, and A. Prem Edwin, director of physical education, felicitated the team members and coach R. Inbamani.
