Two public electronic weighing machines, for ration card holders to verify the quantity of commodities supplied at the ration shops, were commissioned by the Transport Minister, K.N. Nehru, here on Sunday.
The weighing machines have been installed at the Chinthamani Cooperative Supermarket at Puthur and the Amaravathy Cooperative Supermarket on the Old Goodshed Road. Both complexes have four ration shops each. Officials said that the installation of these machines would help prevent complaints of under measurements in commodities supplied in ration shops as the card holders can directly verify them immediately.
New ration shop
Mr. Nehru also commissioned a new ration shop on Kalnayakkan Street at Woraiyur and a new building, constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.50 lakh from the MLA's Local Area Development Fund, for a ration shop on Kura Street.
The Minister also distributed free colour television sets to 3,990 families belonging to ward 52 in K. Abishekapuram zone and ward 5 in Srirangam zone of the Corporation and also declared open a public toilet on Chettipettai Street built at a cost of Rs.13.60 lakh from the Corporation's general fund.
Speaking at a brief function after distribution of the colour television sets, Mr. Nehru said that so far 4.15 lakh families in the district had been provided TV sets and all the remaining eligible families would get the free televison sets soon.
Work on conversion of huts as concrete houses under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme would begin as soon as the enumeration exercise was completed, he said.
