Little ‘Aakash' and ‘Ricky' are the latest additions to the Detective Dog Squad of the Tiruchi Rural Police.
Belonging to the Labrador Retriever breed, the two new puppies have been bought as replacements for the aged ‘Bruno' and ‘Lucky'. The male canines, both five-months old, will soon undergo intensive training in detecting explosive substances.
Basic training in obedience has already commenced for the two puppies at the Detective Dog Squad situated inside the sprawling Armed Reserve unit of the Tiruchi Rural Police. Separate handlers have been assigned to take care of the puppies as well as to impart basic training to them.
The puppies would be sent to the Tamil Nadu Police Detective Dog Training Centre at Coimbatore in August for a six-month specialised training in detecting explosive substances, say police sources adding that they would be inducted into active work upon completion of training. The handlers would be sent along with the puppies to Coimbatore.
The Detective Dog Squad of the Tiruchi Rural Police has at present five sniffer dogs, of which three were ‘trackers' used exclusively for detecting crimes. The puppies have been bought as replacements for the aged ‘Bruno and ‘Lucky' which were used for detection of explosive substances, say police sources.
