Two Customs officials suspended for missing gold

Two senior officials attached to Customs Commissionerate in Tiruchi have been placed under suspension, pending enquiry, on charge of negligence in connection with the theft of about 15 kg of gold kept in a safe of Customs office here. The suspects are yet to be identified.

An official complaint had been sent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Chennai on Monday and a case had been registered, police sources here said.

The gold bars that went missing were seized by Customs officials over a period of time.

It was noticed by a team of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) when they visited the strongroom to take the bars for producing them before a court.

The officials, Mohammed Farooq, Superintendent of Customs, and Senthil Kumar, Inspector of Customs, who were authorised to operate the safe, were present when the DRI team discovered that the gold was missing.
