Two child marriages stopped in Tamil Nadu

Two child marriages, one of them to be held today and another scheduled for Monday, were stopped by the Childline, and officials of the Social Welfare Department and District Child Welfare Committee.

According to sources, a 16-year-old girl from Oddanchathram in Dindigul district was scheduled to be married to a bridegroom from Bhavani in Erode district at a temple Nalliyampatti near Thuraiyur on Sunday. Acting on information, officials of the Department of Social Welfare visited the spot and stopped the marriage. The girl was later handed to the District Child Welfare Committee.

In another incident, the marriage of a 17-year-old girl from Padalur with a boy from Valaiyur near Manachanallur, slated for Monday, was also stopped by the officials.
