Two major burglaries were reported at locked houses at Srinivasa Nagar within Woraiyur limits on Monday.

At a residence at Geetha Nagar, the burglars broke open the front door to gain entry, and took away 55 sovereigns of gold jewellery and about six kg of silver articles, according to the complainant, Venkataramani.

The theft was noticed when the inmates who had gone to Tirupathi on Friday returned home in the afternoon.

After Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Selvakumar visited the scene of crime, the services of finger print experts were requisitioned.

Earlier in the day, the house of a financier located along the fifth street of Seventh Cross was found burgled when the owner returned home this morning. The inmates had left for Palani last night. The intruders had got into the house by twisting and removing the iron grill of the lower part of the window.

The financier, Senthil Kumar (46), has lodged a complaint that Rs. 2.4 lakh kept in the almirah was missing. The loss of jewellery and other valuables could not be determined immediately, police said. Woraiyur police have registered a case and are investigating whether both burglaries were committed by the same persons. Finger prints lifted from both the scenes of crime will be checked for similarity, police sources added.
