Two girl students who were arrested recently in Kulithalai on their way to participate in the protest against the hydrocarbon project at Neduvasal went on a fast at the Special Prison for Women here on Monday.
Police sources said the two college students, Valarmathi and Swathi, resorted to the protest to express their condemnation for allegedly having been stripped by the jail personnel inside the prison recently. However, prison officials denied the charge and maintained that prisoners were only subjected to routine checks by frisking.
The two were among a group of seven students who were arrested by the Karur police a few days ago at Kulithalai when they were coming by a train from Coimbatore to join the protest at Neduvasal in Pudukottai district against the proposed hydrocarbon project.
They were said to be belonging to the Students Uprising Movement for Social Awareness.
The sources further said two other women Kala and Chandra, alleged to be Maoists and lodged in the Special Prison for Women, extended their support to the two students by resorting to fast later in the day.
