A Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) of Tiruchi was placed under suspension after he created a flutter by allegedly throwing petrol on his immediate superior and a couple of other colleagues besides breaking the cabin glass at the TTE room here on Thursday.

The Government Railway Police is conducting an inquiry into the incident after a complaint was lodged against TTE Peer Meeran by one of his colleagues.

Railway sources said the incident took place inside the TTE room located at Tiruchi railway junction in the afternoon. Peer Meeran who sustained injuries after he allegedly broke the cabin glass is undergoing treatment at the Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital here.

Railway sources said Peer Meeran boarded an express train allegedly on his own for duty on Wednesday night although he was not nominated for that train on that day. He returned back to Tiruchi on Thursday and was apparently questioned by his immediate superior at the TTE room for not having followed the duty roster.

The sources said a duty roster is maintained every day while nominating TTEs for official duty on board trains. Enraged over being questioned by his immediate superior, Peer Meeran went out and returned back reportedly with a bottle of petrol. He allegedly poured petrol on himself and threw the fuel on his immediate superior who had questioned him and two other colleagues and threatened them that he would set himself afire and those inside the room. He also allegedly damaged the cabin glass sustaining injuries in his hand.

The matter was immediately conveyed to the divisional railway authorities and senior officials from the Commercial and Security departments of the railway rushed to the spot. The Government Railway Police personnel also went to the spot to inquire into the issue.

Meanwhile, the injured TTE took treatment in a private hospital and later got admitted to the Government Hospital. Senior officials of the Commercial Department obtained statements from Peer Meeran’s immediate superior and other colleagues who were present at the time of the incident. Peer Meeran was thereafter placed under suspension. Railway officials said further inquiry would be conducted. Meanwhile, a separate complaint was lodged with the Government Railway Police by one of the TTEs.
