A group of young minds disappointed with the diminishing green cover in the city decided to do more than to sit around and complain about it. Determined to spike Tiruchi’s environmental quotient, the youth sowed the seeds of their ambitious greening campaign over the weekend.
“Try Green”, an initiative by the Thulir Foundation associated with nammatrichy.com, an information portal on the city, dreams of planting 5,000 green shoots in schools and colleges in a year’s time.
As a first step, the team led by M. Sribalaji, planted around 50 saplings in three aided schools.
Not just planting
Determined not to go the way of green campaigns that stop with merely planting the saplings, Thulir Foundation has come up with a scheme to ensure the saplings are nurtured and blossom into shade-giving trees. “Three students in each school have been assigned to take care of each sapling,” said M. Sribalaji, founder of Nammatrichy portal.
“To ensure they tend to the saplings regularly, we have announced a ‘best caretaker award’ at the end of the year, as an incentive.”The team comprising of students K. Sriram and Helga Sindhuja from Bishop Heber College, Ammu Nair from Holy Cross College, and photographer Dixith and A. Anand mobilised volunteers through their Facebook page.
Saplings were planted at Bishop Heber Memorial School, R.C. Poonthottam School and TELC School, Kemps Town. The team sourced books from various donors estimated at Rs. 10,000 and donated them to these schools.
