Hundreds of NCC and schoolchildren took out a rally on BHEL premises here on Saturday to create awareness on dengue in the scenario of water stagnation caused by rain at road sides, drainages, and at roofs in the houses.
Students displayed placards on the precautions to be taken to prevent the disease.
The rally was flagged off from the Training Centre and crossed A-Sector, B-Sector, Ganesa, Boiler Plant Higher Secondary School, Community Centre, Thiruvalluvar Statue, Millennium Park, E-Sector, and finally reached Kamaraj statue at BHEL Township.
The precautions advocated included avoiding open defecation, keeping the surroundings clean, and removal of bottles, coconut shells, and waste bottles where, they explained, the causative aedes mosquitoes breed.
A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, flagged off the rally in the presence of the M. Palanivel, General Manager, Human Resource, R. Mathiannal, General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, and A.S. Samad, Additional General Manager, Human Resource.
Mr. Krishnan said BHEL had formed a special team to sensitise residents of the township to avert water stagnation.
