Tiruchirapalli City Corporation will hire a private consultant soon to design and prepare detailed project report for establishing a bus stand in Srirangam.
Although a major tourist attraction, Srirangam does not have a proper bus stand all these years.
The island town with a population of 1.02 lakh, attracts a floating population of about 20,000 every day. Nearly 300 tourist vehicles visit the town on an average every day.
Town and mofussil buses and tourist vehicles have to be parked on the roadsides.
The proposed bus stand is planned to be established at Panchakarai on the banks of the Coleroon, adjacent to the Yatri Nivas that is under construction.
The corporation has already allotted land at the site for the Yatri Nivas and Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board for construction of houses.
The civic body is left with 6.6 acres of land in its old sewage treatment farm, where the bus stand will come up.
The civic body has decided to shift the sewage treatment farm, which is in disuse. The new bus stand is expected to be set up at an investment of about Rs. 20 crore.
Although the corporation had requested the Department of Municipal Administration to identify a consultant to design and prepare the detailed project report for the project, the department has asked the civic body to identify an agency.
Two bids have been received for the tenders floated for the purpose and only one of them is said to have been technically qualified. A decision on the matter will be taken up with the approval of the Corporation Council.
The corporation is likely to rope in the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation to design a modern fish complex planned in the city.
A State-owned company, the Kerala Corporation is technically equipped to design and prepare the project report, official sources said.
The civic body plans to establish the fish market at Kasivilangi on a 2.5-acre site along the Kuzhumani Road in the city.
Although fish markets are functioning at the Puthur and Gandhi Markets in the city, they are faced with space and infrastructure constraints.
Once the detailed project estimates are ready, the corporation will approach funding agencies for assistance to execute the project.
