TMC not to contest by-poll

May 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Tamil Maanilla Congress president G.K.Vasan on Thursday strongly indicated that his party is unlikely to contest the by-election to the R.K.Nagar constituency.

“At this minute, there is no change in the stand which we took with respect to the Srirangam by-election [which the party did not contest]. Being a new party, our interest is in the general election and not by-elections. However, I will consult my party office-bearers and make our stand known,” he said speaking to The Hindu over the phone from Thanjavur on Thursday.

Kuruvai cultivation

Referring to the ensuing kuruvai cultivation in the delta districts, Mr.Vasan observed that the delay in the release of water from Mettur reservoir over the past few years had caused distress among farmers. The storage at the Mettur reservoir is currently around 70 feet and Karnataka has to release 2.5 tmc of water in the Cauvery this month and 10 tmc in June. This was essential for farmers to take up kuruvai cultivation in about three lakh acres.
