Students of classes VIII to XII of different schools in Tiruchi created practically implementable environmental models during the interschool environmental model competition organised by Tiruchi district Exnora and Youth Exnora International at Cauvery College for Women in the city on Tuesday.
Models on environmental management, rainwater harvesting, solar energy, waste water purification, afforestation, prevention of pollution, converting deserts into tropical land and a model titled ‘why we do not require nuclear power plants’ were some of the creative exhibits made by students.
The theme of the competition was ‘save our mother earth’ and exhibits were judged in two categories- category A included classes VIII to X and category B consisted of classes XI and XII.
Montfort School, Sri Sivananda Balalaya, Campion Higher Secondary School and Vasavi Vidhyalaya School won prizes in the first category while SRV Matric Higher Secondary School, Cauvery Matric Higher Secondary School and Montfort School bagged prizes in the second category.
V.P. Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner, addressed students during the valediction and advised them to put in their best efforts to save mother earth. “With population explosion resulting in depletion of natural resources, it becomes important to use non renewable resources judicially. We need to ensure that future generations are also able to enjoy natural resources,” he said.
Mr.Rajkumar from the department of environment, Bharathidasan University, who judged the exhibits, said that the work did not seem to have been done by school students but was akin to those created at the college level.
C.Balasubramanian, district president Exnora, K.Rengarajan, secretary, Cauvery college governing council and members of Exnora were present during the event.
