The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has been selected for the implementation of National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) for the benefit of people living in slum areas in the city.
The scheme paves the way for the establishment of an Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHCs) for every slum with a population of 50,000-60,000. A cluster of four or five UPHCs will be linked to an Urban Community Health Centre.
Explaining the features of the scheme at an urgent meeting of the council held here on Monday, V. P. Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner, said that the urban community health centre would cater to the healthcare needs of a population of 2.5 lakh to 5 lakh. The urban community health centre would have 30 to 50 beds with quality healthcare delivery, with maternity ward and a minor operation theatre.
“The existing infrastructure would be strengthened while new buildings would also be constructed wherever needed,” he said. While 75 per cent of the expenditure would be borne by the Centre, the balance 25 per cent would be contributed by the State government.
Mr. Dhandapani said the Corporation would identify slum areas where the urban primary health centre and urban community health centre would be set up and a proposal would be sent shortly.
