Public sector undertakings, political parties, and other organisations celebrated the Gandhi Jayanti by garlanding the statues and portraits of the Father of the Nation, reciting the verses from holy books, administering oath, taking out rallies and so on, across the district on Wednesday.
A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, garlanded the statue at the administrative building. Mr. Krishnan brought out the importance of satyagraha in the contemporary period and said that the Mahatma’s non-violence and satyagraha principles continued to influence people from all walks of life.
Students of the schools situated in the BHEL Township recited verses from Bhagwat Gita, the Koran, and the Bible. Sweets were distributed among inmates of Home for Leprosy at Manaiyeripatti.
The urban district unit of the Congress celebrated Gandhi Jayanti, death anniversary of the late K. Kamaraj and Lalbahadur Sastri Jayanti at the party headquarters in the city.
Led by G. Jerome Arokyaraj, president of the urban district unit of the party, the former mayors Sarubala Tondaiman, and Sujatha, garlanded the portraits of the Mahatma and Kamaraj. Members of various wings of the party were present.
At Tiruchi Kendra of Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, the yeoman services rendered by Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Kamaraj were recalled by speakers. A group of students of Seva Sangam Girls Higher Secondary School, rendered patriotic bhajans.
J.T. Chari, director (projects) of the bhavan, was present.
The students of Seva Sangam Girls Higher Secondary School, carrying portraits of the Mahatma, took out a rally in the city.
The students of Sri Sivananda Balalaya celebrated the occasion by paying tributes at the Gandhi Mandapam.
M. Gopalakrishnan addressed the students on “relevance of Gandhiji today”. The children also participated in an all faith prayer.
