The proposed expansion of territorial limits of Police Commissionerate has now taken a concrete shape.

Modalities with respect to police stations and peripheral areas under Tiruchi Rural Police, which could be attached with the Commissionerate, have been worked out by the Tiruchi City Expansion Committee comprising Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Tiruchi City, and Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi. After carrying out a thorough study , the committee recommended that the police stations at Manikandam, Ramji Nagar, Somarasampettai, Tiruverumbur, Kollidam, Navalpattu, and BHEL and areas under their jurisdiction besides manpower be attached with the Commissionerate.

It has also been proposed to bring certain areas in Samayapuram under the ambit of Commissionerate, which is headed by an Inspector General Police.

The expansion committee was constituted on the direction of the Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav after the office of the Director General of Police called for a detailed proposal for expanding the jurisdiction of Tiruchi Commissionerate.

The mother villages and hamlets situated in the peripheral areas that could be attached with the Commissionerate have also been worked out by the committee. Accordingly, nine mother villages and 30 hamlets within Manikandam police station limits, six mother villages and 21 hamlets in Ramji Nagar station 15 mother villages and 45 hamlets in Somarasampettai, 16 mother villages and 28 hamlets in Tiruverumbur, and six mother villages and 16 hamlets in Kollidam police station are proposed to be brought under the Commissionerate.

The entire BHEL Township and a section of areas along the Tiruchi-Chennai NH presently under Samayapuram police station limits, defence establishments such as Ordnance Factory and HAPP, and Bharathidasan University have also been proposed to be brought under the Commissionerate.

Presently, the Commissionerate encompasses 14 police stations under Cantonment, Fort, Srirangam, and Golden Rock ranges.

The Tiruchi Rural police, headed by Superintendent of Police, currently accounts for 29 police stations falling under Tiruverumbur, Jeeyapuram, Musiri, Manapparai, and Lalgudi sub divisions. Police sources said that a detailed proposal would soon be forwarded by the Commissioner of Police to the State government through the Office of the Director General of Police for approval. Additional manpower strength would be sought in view of the proposed expansion.
