City boy S.Akilesh Viswaa has bagged a brace of silver medals at the Asian Schools Chess Championship held in Sri Lanka recently. The championship was conducted in standard, rapid, and blitz formats for open and girls’ sections in seven age categories – under-17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7 and 5.

Viswaa, a class 5 student of Campion Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, took part in the under-9 category and finished second in the rapid and blitz formats. “These are my first medals at the international-level and it feels great,” said the youngster. Viswaa won six out of the seven rounds in the rapid format. The solitary loss came against R.Raja Rithvik, who went on to win the gold medal. In the blitz format, he won five of the seven rounds and drew two. “The rapid event was a lot tougher,” the nine-year-old felt.

Viswaa has set his sights on the national chess championship and world youth chess championship to be held later this year. “Viswaa is determined to make it big in chess and the silver medals have given him a lot of confidence,” said his father Senthilkumar Nallusamy, chief cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, Tiruchi, acknowledging the support of chess bodies, coaches, and school management.
