Tiruchi city, due to its strategic location in the heart of the State, witnesses heavy flow of vehicular traffic round the year. Traffic congestion continues to be the order of the day, despite new four-lane highways, flyovers, and widened city roads. People have been craving for facilities like an integrated bus stand on the outskirts, widening of the flyover at the Viralimalai road junction, sub-ways, and foot over-bridges at busy junctions.
Tiruchi Railway Junction and the roads leading to it are the points where traffic snarls are frequent. The flow of traffic in the late evening hours is so heavy that traffic snarls cause anxiety to the people rushing to catch trains and buses at the central bus stand. The entrance to the railway junction is choked with people trying to cross the roads. Two-wheelers, autos, lorries, and city and mofussil buses add to the congestion. Tiruchiites have been demanding a sub-way at the entrance to the junction for the benefit of the people to cross Bharathiyar Salai to reach the junction and vice versa. It is high time that the corporation authorities visualised future requirements for the city in view of the rise in the number of vehicles and spurt in the flow of tourists and devotees, says C. Balasubramnaian, president of Tiruchi District Exnora.
All the city buses proceeding to Chathiram Bus Stand and Srirangam from the Central Bus Stand indiscriminately are parked at the busy junction, despite the presence of a bus shelter a little distance away. This is also despite the presence of traffic police personnel in the vicinity.
Construction of a bus bay near Daily Thanthi office will solve the problem, says Mr. Balasubramanian.
