Tiruchi Railway Junction is all set to become a Wi-Fi zone since work connected with providing this new service has been completed. The new facility put in place for the benefit of the rail travellers will be inaugurated on July 24 by the Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu through video-conference from Chennai.

The RailTel Corporation of India – a Government of India Enterprise – teamed up with Google to offer the Wi-Fi facility at Tiruchi Junction. Necessary technical infrastructure for providing the service has been put in place and testing work has been completed ahead of the launch. Officials said travellers could browse the Internet at a speed of 1 Gbps at Tiruchi Junction through the Wi-Fi service.

The RailTel Corporation has installed routers and switches that are connected through optic fibre and access points provided by Google for faster signal delivery. Testing of the new facility had been carried out and the service is all set for inauguration, a senior railway official said. The officials said the service would be provided free of cost for the time being.

The Tiruchi junction has been witnessing a steady rise in passenger traffic over the years amid increase in train services.

It handles over 100 trains and not less than 15,000 passengers every day, on an average.
