The K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College in Tiruchirappalli will be soon be brought under the scope of closed circuit television (CCTV) system.
Preliminary works for putting in place the surveillance cameras-based monitoring mechanism has commenced inside the institution situated in close proximity to the central bus stand. The vantage spots within the campus for installation of surveillance cameras have been identified with works expected to be completed by early July.
The Medical College Dean Prof. Dr. M.K. Muralidharan told The Hindu that 25 to 30 surveillance cameras would be installed. The cameras would cover the hostels and the two entrances. The college has five hostels including three meant for ladies. The move to put in place CCTV monitoring system follows a circular from the Medical College of India recently. The system is poised for implementation soon as a measure to check ragging and keep a close watch on the entry of strangers inside the institution, he added.
The slew of cameras would be connected to the Dean’s chamber to closely monitor the movements and activities taking place inside the campus. The video footages generated from the cameras could be viewed as and when required. Funds to the tune of Rs. 9 lakh has been invested for installation of the CCTV system, Dr. Muralidharan said exuding hope that it would be commissioned soon.
The medical college that was started in 1997 has an Anti-Ragging committee encompassing senior college faculty members, civil and student representatives and a non-teaching member.
