Here is good news for the commuters of Tiruchi district.

The struggles of consumer, trader, and voluntary organisations along with the travelling pubic for the past few years to restore the Rockfort Express to Tiruchi have borne fruit.

The Railways has decided to concede their demand and terminate this train at Tiruchi.

“The Railway Board has decided to restore the Chennai-Tiruchi-Kumbakonam Rockfort Express to its original route of Tiruchi-Chennai and has notified it.

However, the date of the implementation of this decision has not been notified so far and will be announced later,” Railway sources told The Hindu on Sunday.

Date not decided

The date from which this train will be operated from Tiruchi is expected to be decided after the Railways takes a decision on the introduction of the new night train in the Thanjavur-Chennai section on the main line, announced in the Railway Budget 2013.

The Rockfort Express was originally introduced in the Tiruchi-Chennai section on the chord line. Later, it was extended to Thanjavur and then to Kumbakonam.

Since then, various organisations and travelling public of Tiruchi district have been demanding that train be restored to its original route.
