The Tiruchi district police is the latest in the central zone to be brought under the scope of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).
Thirty three police stations falling within the limits of the district police had been integrated with the CCTNS, a mission mode project of the Government of India that aims to automate and network police stations across the country to facilitate sharing of data, including that of criminals. Ten year case details booked in police stations have been digitized under the CCTNS and computers installed at every station have been networked with the State Crime Records Bureau. Three policemen in every station have been trained in core application software CIPRUS (Common Integrated Police Records Updation System) developed by the National Informatics Centre to meet the specific requirements of the State.
Complainants approaching police stations will be provided with a computer-generated community service register receipt upon receipt of petitions under the system. Ariyalur, Karur, and Pudukottai districts, besides the Tiruchi Police Commissionerate in the central region, have already been brought under the CCTNS. The IT-enabled system was formally commissioned at the Samayapuram police station on Thursday by Superintendent of Police S. Rajeswari. The funds allocated under the project for Tamil Nadu alone is Rs. 113.24 crore to cover 1,482 police stations, offices of 479 superior officers, and 938 special units / offices across the State.
