Tiruchi Diocese celebrates 125th anniversary

A concerted effort should be made towards building a society that focuses on extending assistance to the economically weaker sections, said Most Rev. Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal.

Addressing devotees at the 125-th anniversary of the Tiruchi Diocese here on Sunday, he said that values should be inculcated in the masses. Explaining the ethics codified in the Holy Bible, he said that fairness and equality should be ensured to every individual. He called upon the priests, sisters and bishops present on the occasion to strive hard for the poor.

He recalled the efforts taken by the founders of the diocese whose vision had been responsible for providing educational opportunities to the needy in this part of the State.

Most Rev Antony Devotta, Bishop of Tiruchi, handed over some gold to Most. Rev. Pennacchio, to be utilised for the construction of a cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health at Melapudhur. The Bishop of Tiruchi was given the donation by the devotees in recognition of his decade-long service to the community. Most Re. George Antonysamy, Apostolic Nuncio to Guinea, Liberia and Gambia; archbishops, bishops and sisters from various parts of the State were present. Earlier, a special mass was held as part of the celebrations.
