A large number of students from different colleges in the district exhibited their skill in various events – right from quiz to dance, dance, one-act-play, playing on music instruments so on and so forth.
Called “top notcher 14,” the two-day event was organised by the Rotary Club of Tiruchi Rockcity. It concluded on Sunday.
Every student is blessed with some talent or other and the event aims at identifying and nurturing the same, says Mahesh Kumar N. Khanna, chairman of the project of the club. There was overwhelming response from 20 colleges and a total of 224 students participated in the preliminary event which included a written test and a self-appraisal.
The topic for the preliminary test was ‘gender bias’ and ‘deluge in Kashmir’ in the written test. The preliminary test aimed at ascertaining the writing capability and memory skills of students. Another preliminary test was on ‘just a minute’ when students were asked to present an address on a given topic for 60 seconds.
“A total of 60 students were short-listed in the preliminary rounds. They entered the second phase of final test on Sunday,” said Q. Abdul Khalique, president of the club.
The final test was a bit tough posing a challenge to the students. “As you like it” programme provided a great opportunity and a lot of choices for the students to exhibit their talents. While a girl presented a ‘bharathanatyam,’ another student played guitar.
More interesting was a group discussion when topics such as advantages and disadvantages of sports and extra curricular activities in colleges were discussed.
‘Mr. Top Notcher’ and ‘Ms. Top Notcher’ title went to J. Basin Xavier of Care Group of Institutions and R. Jayashree from Saranathan College of Engineering respectively. They will participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) programme to be held in October in Dindigual, according to Mr. Khanna.
‘Mr. Ekalaivan’ title was bagged by G. Jayakumar of MIET Arts and Science College while ‘Ms. Ekalaivan’ title went to K. Radhika of Shivani College of Engineering and Technology.
J.Sujith Kumar, Location Head, Human Resources and HR Business Manager, Infosys Limited, Chennai, gave away the titles to the winners. He appealed to students to develop values and good qualities. Students should grab the opportunities available in the present-day situation.
