Civic body to set up abattoir at two places

Centre to provide 50 p.c. of the project cost of Rs. 9.85 crore

August 21, 2014 10:36 am | Updated 10:36 am IST - TIRUCHI:

The Tiruchirappalli City Corporation has planned to set up two modern abattoirs (slaughterhouse) to prevent slaughtering of goats for meat in the open places and to improve hygiene.

The facilities will be established at a cost of Rs. 9.85 crore with the support of Union Ministry of Food Processing.

While the Ministry will contribute 50 per cent of the project cost, the rest will be raised either through the own funding of the corporation or the State government.

At present, slaughtering of animals for food purposes is often either carried out under a tree or in deteriorated and outdated slaughter units without proper waste treatment facilities.

In some places, goats, sheep, and chickens are slaughtered in front of the shops by violating the rules and regulations of health officials.

It often results in health hazards through contamination of meat during slaughter operations and of the surround land and water through uncontrolled release of effluents and waste.

The project is expected to follow the established guidelines in the Code of Hygienic Practices for Fresh Meat prescribed by the World Health Organisation. The design and facilities are expected to meet the code.

V.P. Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner, who is in New Delhi to discuss about the project with the officials of Ministry of Food Processing, told The Hindu that it had been planned to complete the project within nine months as the corporation had completed civil works for the project.

Gandhi Market and G. Corner had been chosen for establishing the abattoirs. The lands had been identified, although there were some issues with G. Corner land.

It was decided to approach experts for project consultancy. The firm would provide all technical support to establish abattoirs.

Mr. Thandapani added that there was a need to get clearance from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI).

The Corporation had already written to them take needy steps for no objection certificate.
