The Tiruchi zone unit of Association of University Teachers (AUT) has appealed to the Department of Higher Education to evolve explicit service conditions for teachers of constituent colleges of universities.
Alleging “step-motherly treatment” for teachers of its constituent colleges by Bharathidasan University, the secretary of the unit, N. Peer Mohamed Sathik, said in a statement that their service conditions did not reflect their status as employees governed by the Bharathidasan University Act and Statutes.
They were not treated on par with university employees as they were not considered even to receive library cards to borrow books. The University Grants Commission travel grant assistance for attending conferences or seminars was also denied to them.
The statement favoured reopening of constituent colleges in June, as in the case of affiliated colleges, instead of July, by adhering to twin-vacation system as per government order. More than 30 teaching days were lost every academic year by following the university’s July-to-June academic calendar, it said.
The constituent colleges at Kurumbalur and Veppur of Perambalur district; Orathanadu in Thanjavur district; Lalgudi and Inam Kulathur of Tiruchi district; Aranthangi of Pudukottai district;
Thiruthuraipoondi and Nannilam in Tiruvarur district and Vedaranyam and Nagapattinam in Nagapattinam district were not headed by a permanent Principal and full-fledged, qualified, regular principals should be appointed immediately.
The statement wanted the university to regularise the services of guest lecturers.
