Employees of the Tiruchi Airport, owing allegiance to the Airports Authority Employees’ Union, launched a four-day relay fast at the airport here on Tuesday protesting the Centre’s move to privatise six airports across the country, including the Chennai International Airport.

A group of 25 members of the union observed fast on the first day on Tuesday. However, airport operations were not disrupted.

“We do not want airport operations to be affected and that is why we have launched a relay fast. However, we strongly condemn the Centre’s move to privatise six airports, including Chennai, Lucknow, and Kolkatta.

We want the government to stop this and privatisation of any airport in the country in future,” said M. Nithyanandam, branch secretary, AAEU, Tiruchi.

The Airports Authority of India has about 155 employees at the Tiruchi Airport.
