Three peripheral first aid centres were opened by the Indian Red Cross Society at Singarathope, Teppakulam, and Main Guard Gate in the city on Tuesday.

The aim of the centres is to cater to the needs of people during emergencies triggered by crowds and traffic holdups and bursting of crackers during festival season.

A total of 75 members of the District Disaster Response Team will work in shifts at the three centres. Volunteers from different hospitals and trainees of Red Cross Society will be part of the initiative, according to Edmund William, chairman, district disaster response team.

A wheelchair, gauze, first-aid kit, trained staff and volunteers will be present in each centre that will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The centres inaugurated by J.J.L.Gnanaraj, vice president, Tiruchi District IRC society, will function up to Deepavali.
