Almost a year after the formation of the search committee, three names have been short listed for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University.
The committee headed by Karu Nagarajan, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE), submitted the list with the Governor Dr. K. Rosaiah on Saturday, informed sources told The Hindu .
It is said that the committee had recommended three names – S. Subbiah, Professor and Head, Department of English and Foreign Languages, Alagappa University, Karaikudi, M. Muthu Kumar, former Principal of Government Arts College, Coimbatore and M. Kandasamy, Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.
Of them, the Governor will select a candidate as Vice-Chancellor.
Mr. Subbiah, who has guided nearly 20 PhD candidates, is the syndicate member of the Bharathidasan University. He is also one of the members of V-C officiating committee, which is discharging important duties and responsibilities of V-C, the post of which is vacant since the end of tenure of Ms. Meena in July 2013. The second shortlisted candidate Mr. Kandasamy, former syndicate member of Bharathiar University, has also guided many PhD candidates.
UGC guidelinesThe appointment of new V-C is being eagerly awaited by the higher education fraternity in the State following the direction of the Madras High Court to follow all stipulated guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC) on appointment of Vice-Chancellor.
Earlier, the Tamil Nadu Federation of Universities’ Faculty Associations had moved the High Court seeking direction to the government to select the Vice-Chancellor in a transparent manner.
Since the end of tenure of Ms. Meena, a V-C Officiating Committee headed by Law Secretary Dr. Jayachandran is discharging the duties of V-C.
Meanwhile, the meeting of search committee, appointed for selecting the Vice Chancellor of Alagappa University, Karaikudi has been postponed.
