A group of 24 persons including six children were injured when the van in which they were travelling rammed a stationary lorry on the Tiruchi – Chennai national highway near Samayapuram on Thursday. The van overturned on the roadside.
Two sustained severe head injury and died on the way to the hospital while another person succumbed during treatment. Police gave the names of the victims as Sekar (50), R. Bhuvanesh (15) and P. Sumithra (21), all from Cuddalore.
Six among the injured were admitted as in-patients at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital at Tiruchi while 13 others were admitted to a couple of private hospitals in the city.
Two others were treated as out-patients at the government hospital here.
The lorry was seized and its driver R. Senthil (31) of Sivaganga district was detained. The police have registered a case on a complaint lodged by the van driver K. Dhilipanvelu.
