Three senior students of the Government Physiotherapy College here were arrested in the city on Tuesday on the charge of ragging juniors of the institution.
The Cantonment Police has registered a case under Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997 against the accused — I. Ajeen (20), a fourth year student; P. Dharmaraj (19) and A. Prakash (19), both second year students — acting on a complaint lodged by N. Balasubramanian, Dean, K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, Tiruchi.
The Government Physiotherapy College with a student population of about 200, is attached to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College in Tiruchi.
The students had allegedly ragged three junior students a few days ago. Upon a written complaint proffered by one of the affected student’s father to the College authorities, an enquiry was conducted by a committee comprising the College Principal (in-charge), Vice Principal and the senior-most faculty of the institution.
An enquiry by the committee revealed that the senior students had indulged in ragging following which Dean Dr. Balasubramanian placed the three senior students under suspension on Monday.
The police were informed on Monday night and a case was registered. Police said the senior students were produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court (II) here and remanded. They were later sent to the Borstal School at Thanjavur accommodating young offenders.
