The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation, which is struggling to reduce traffic congestion due to space crunch at Central Bus Stand, has begun preparatory works to establish a satellite bus stand in Mannarpuram on Defence land.

The move is expected to reduce traffic congestion to a certain extent at the Central Bus Stand and V.O.Chidambaram road.

V.P.Thandapani, Corporation Commissioner , told The Hindu on Sunday that the satellite bus stand would be functioning on about 10 acres of land. Permission from the authorities had been received.

Levelling works had already been started. All basic amenities, including drinking water and sanitation, would provided to the passengers. Sufficient lighting arrangements would also been made at the temporary bus stand. All works would be completed within Wednesday.

All buses on Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Madurai routes would be operated from the satellite bus stand. It was estimated that they would make about 2,000 trips a day. The satellite bus stand to be operated for a month would help clear the Deepavali rush of passengers. If need be, steps would be taken to extend the period.
