A Junior Engineer of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) was arrested by officers of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) here on Wednesday on graft charge.
The officers seized about Rs. 8,000 from the accused B. Kamaraj (46), who works as Junior Engineer Grade –I in the TANGEDCO office (operations and maintenance) near the Collectorate.
Upon arresting Kamaraj, the DVAC officers conducted a search in his house at John Thoppu in the city.
According to DVAC sources, Kamaraj had demanded Rs. 10,000 from Nandakumar — a businessman of Palakkarai — to provide power connection to the new house constructed by the latter at Khajapettai.
Mr. Nandakumar had reportedly remitted the fees for getting electricity connection and added that the Junior Engineer subsequently settled for Rs. 8,000 to sanction the connection.
Mr. Nandakumar lodged a complaint with the DVAC, Tiruchi unit, and a case was registered on Tuesday. The DVAC personnel laid a trap and caught Kamaraj red-handed when he was taking money in his office from Nandakumar.
He was later produced before the Special Court for cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act here and remanded in judicial custody. He has been lodged in Tiruchi Central Prison.
