Playing in front of the home crowd, the hosts were under pressure to perform. And that too being the defending champions.

The Tamil Nadu girls team did not disappoint the fans as they started off the tournament at the 27th Youth National Basketball Championship with two consecutive wins.

On Wednesday, the opening day, the defending champions cruised to an easy win over West Bengal in a league fixture, much to the delight of the local audience. Every point scored by the team won roaring applause from the crowd.

“The girls are playing well as a unit. The commitment with which they practiced is paying rich rewards now,” said the coach N. Sampath.

On Thursday morning, the girls continued their good show by scoring a facile win over Delhi.

“The girls are playing positively and are not allowing the opponents to settle down. We have started the tournament on a winning note and wish to keep the momentum going,” Mr. Sampath said, making a special mention about the support and guidance of K.N. Ramajayam, president, Tamil Nadu Basketball Association.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu boys' team also won its opening match beating Harayana.
