A sub-inspector of survey was arrested here by the officials of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) on graft charge here on Friday.
The accused G. Varadharajan (53) was produced before the Special Court for trial of cases registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and remanded in judicial custody. Varadharajan was the sub-inspector of Survey of Tiruchi West Taluk and held additional charge as Sub-Inspector of Survey, Ponmalai zone.
DVAC sources said Shakila Bhanu, the complainant, had acquired power of attorney for a house site belonging to her relative at E. Pudur.
Her neighbour had encroached upon the vacant site to the extent of 700 square feet. Following this, Ms. Bhanu sought the help of the police who asked her to approach the surveyor.
Accordingly, she approached the surveyor to measure the land and paid the prescribed fee to the corporation. The sources said Mr. Varadharajan allegedly demanded Rs. 3,000 to measure the land.
The woman lodged a complaint with the DVAC, Tiruchi unit on Thursday and a case was registered. DVAC officials laid a trap and arrested the sub-inspector of survey at his office when he took the money. The bribe money was seized from him, the sources said.
