The super-speciality block at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) premises in the city was inaugurated by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through videoconferencing on Friday.
The over 30,000 sq. ft 589-bedded block will accommodate 12 speciality departments, including cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, medical and surgical oncology, and neurosurgery, in addition to trauma care and radio diagnostic surgery.
Jayashree Muralidharan, Collector, P.Karkuzhali, Dean, MGMGH, M.A.Aleem, vice principal, K.A.P.Viswanatham Government Medical College; A.Kanagasundaram, medical superintendent, MGMGH, and R.Manoharan, government chief whip, were among those present. Sweets were distributed to government officials, medical students, and general public to celebrate the occasion.
The multi-storeyed building (G + 6 floors) is equipped with five elevators and three generators for providing 24-hour uninterrupted power supply. The project has come up at a cost of Rs. 60.94 crore and was funded entirely by the State government. The casualty (trauma care) ward commenced operation on Friday and other departments are expected to follow suit in a few days.
With the addition of the new block, the hospital now boasts a total bedding capacity of more than 1,200. This is a boon for the rural population in the surrounding districts of Tiruchi, who will immensely benefit from the service.
