Water logging during monsoon may be a common issue in many cities and towns. The situation may worsen if a town gets continuous heavy downpour for a few days. But Subramaniapuram and Ranjithapuram, off the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass, get flooded even if there is rain for 30 minutes.

Monday’s heavy rain in the city yet again exposed the poor drainage network in the area.

Many lanes and bylanes in Ranjithapuram and Subramaniapuram got inundated with three or four feet water within a short span of time.

The storm water, mixed with sewage, entered many houses in low-lying lanes. The water receded eight hours after the rain stopped.

Residents said that although these areas generally get affected during rainy season, the situation worsened after the four-laning of the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass. Rainwater from the road, which was about 7 feet above the residential colonies, flows into the lanes.

The road planners failed to provide sufficient culverts to drain the water. “The sufferings of the people have deepened after the formation of bypass. Monday’s rain has once again exposed the plight of the residents.

Many of us, particularly elders and children, had a tough time because of water stagnation,” said S. Inian, who lives on Kattabomman Street.

Residents said complaints to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation had not yielded any response so far.
