The two-day district-level ‘National Science Congress’ provided an opportunity for the students of various schools in the district to prepare a project on environment and present it in an eye-catching manner.

The theme of the congress this year was ‘Understanding Weather and Climate’, and the Tamil Nadu Science Forum, in coordination with the Department of School Education, organised the congress to motivate the students to understand the importance of environment protection and protect the universe from the adverse impact of global warming. The congress, apart from promoting scientific temper among students, also acts as a catalyst in developing their life-skills.

Divided into groups, the students explained the procedure adopted by them for preparing the project. For instance, the group from the Panchayat Union Middle School in Vaiyampatti led by M.Marimuthu, presented a project on ‘Impact of human activities on weather and climate change’. Raja, Kamatchi, Dhaarani, and Dharshini, the other members of the team, said they visited various shops and sensitised the masses to the hazards of plastics.

“The students worked hard for about two months and interviewed village panchayat president Rani Shanmugavel and others to drive home the message on the hazards of plastic waste,” said S.Jesuraj, headmaster of the school.

They also took out a procession in the village in this regard. The congress enabled students understand the need for conserving natural resources, said A.Sakthivel, a science teacher, who coordinated the programme.

In all, 700 students from 50 schools have submitted 100 projects on the topic. “We would select 11 projects for the State-level congress to be held in Pudukottai for three days from December 6,” said S.Natarajan, district president, Tamil Nadu Science Forum. The national congress would be held in Bengaluru from December 27 to 31.

The valediction of the congress would be held on Sunday when prizes would be distributed to winning groups.
