College student S. Rajalakshmi (19) ended her life by setting herself ablaze here on Thursday.
She was under the care of her mother and grandmother since her father had died.
Police said the girl studied in Tamil medium till Plus Two and joined B.Com. in a private college here.
The girl could not cope with English medium.
She was said to have urged her mother to put her in another institution with Tamil as the medium of instruction.
But the girl’s mother was said to have expressed her inability due to their poor economic condition. When she resorted to the extreme step in her house at Vamadam when her mother, a house maid, was away, neighbours tried to save the girl but she died in the fire. The Thillai Nagar police have registered a case.
