The medical fraternity in the city came together to laud the commendable service of three doctors on Sunday.
The fourth Dr.M.S.Ashraf Doctor’s Day awards were presented to paediatrician Hemalatha David for community service in villages, particularly among dyslexic children, P.M.Bhaskaran for exemplary surgical skills, and M.Chenniappan for teaching excellence in equipping rural doctors with practical cardiology. Presenting the awards, K.Meena, vice-chancellor, Bharathidasan University, called for strengthening of linkages between academia and hospitals.
To meet the demands of the healthcare industry for efficient hospital managers, medical physicists, and radiation safety officers, the university had introduced M.Sc Medical Physics and M.B.A in Hospital Management, a few years back. Feedback from doctors in framing and revising the curriculum for these courses can aid in updating the syllabus keeping in tune with contemporary needs.
She hoped that more doctors would be inducted into the Board of Studies responsible for formation of curriculum. Efforts were underway in enhancing diagnostic and therapeutic research for cancer, she noted.
The presentation of awards this year was preceded by a brief profile of awardees in the way of a power-point presentation and a video testimony by colleagues. President of Tiruchi chapter of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Dr.Hemalatha David, was commended for her commitment to society and sensitivity to needs of people. Dr.Bhaskaran, consultant surgeon at Gitanjali Medical Centre, was honoured for ‘exemplary surgical skills and magnanimity in service.’ Accolades were heaped on Dr.Chenniappan, cardiologist, Ramakrishna Nursing Home and managing trustee of the ECG and ECHO Club, for excellence in training physicians on practical cardiology.
He was also nominated as member of Planning Board of Bharathidasan University.
Speaking on behalf of the recipients, Dr.Chenniappan thanked the contributors behind the awards. Paediatrician Suresh Chelliah, Ms.Govindaraj and cardiologist N.Senthilkumar testified the excellence of their colleagues.
Senior paediatrician Lakshminarayan, laparoscopic surgeon A.Zameer Pasha and R.Gunasekaran, past president of the Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu, spoke.
The awards were initiated by M.S.Ashraf, president, Tamil Nadu Medical Council, who created a corpus to honour outstanding city doctors, from the award money he received as part of the B.C.Roy national award.
